ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TURBO TRAINERS AND ROLLERS
Turbo Trainers and Rollers are like the 'cod liver oil' of cycling.
Riders aren't thrilled about doing it, but turbo / rollers are good for cycling!
Turbo Trainers and rollers serve a number of functions:
-Keep your cardio and leg muscles fit over the winter
-Keeps the feel of your bike so there isn't 'saddle surprise' in the spring
-Good time to work on pedaling circles and keeping the cadence high.
-Get used to a proper road riding position, provided your bike is properly set up.
-Step in shoes: A perfect time to get used to new step in shoes and pedals.
-(Rollers) keep your 'road feel' going as well as get a good balance work out.
-Triathletes: Trainers and rollers keep up your cardio and leg muscles instead of pounding out knees and hips on icy roads in cold temperatures.
You need to consider:
-A Turbo Trainer or rollers or both.
-Bike that fits you and works well (Doesn't have to be your front line bike)
-work out program or a workout DVD program. Avoid hours of Hamster wheeling.
-get a cadence (essential) and distance speedometer
-proper front wheel holder block, preferably a stackable type that allows 'climbing' and solidly holds your front wheel during workouts, (NOT just an old shoe.)
-proper 'trainer' tire. A non-road tire that is made specially to grip the little trainer wheel or rollers.
-Trainer mat. (cleanable, instead of a carpet remnant that eventually smells like a cave full of dead bats! Ewww!)
-sweat catcher so your sweat doesn't drip into your bike stem/bars and headset.
Trainers:
Many different types available. Generally, the more you pay, the quieter, better workload and more durable the machine.
Cheap trainers are very noisy, internal parts rub, screech, fragile, inconsistent work load, chirping and wear out quickly.
Decent quality magnetic / adjustable or fluid are the best.
Computrainer, Tacx etc: Very sophisticated, very expensive, complicated to set up and run. Are you a techie? Will you use all its amazing functions?
Trainer Advantage: Great 'hands free' work out with a variety of cardio. No balance needed.
Rollers:
Get something with wide rollers, preferably aluminum. You get what you pay for.
Forces you to have good cycling balance on a bike.
They look scary but they are not. Riding rollers is like learning to swim. A bit of practice is required before you improve.
Most riders that have any reservations about biking would do well to use them once or twice per week!
Roller riding once or twice a week is a great complement to trainer riding.
Be prepared to replace the bearings as they run at a very high speed.
Notes:
Get decent bib type shorts to trainer ride with. Your butt will thank you for it. Wear a standard, wicking type jersey. Wash them both after EVERY SESSION.
If you have more than one bike, choose the one with the cheaper drive train. Turbo training causes high drive train wear.
Get your bike position set up, properly. Simply hammering the seat forward in the post and tilting the bars up is not enough.
(most folks make more of a fuss over bike color than they do getting a proper bike fit!)
Put a big, old towel over the front of your bike to protect it from sweat.
Step in shoes? Turbo training is a perfect time to get used to new 'step in' shoes and pedals.
'Step ins' are the single biggest way to improve your speed and power on a bike.
Get the right shoes and pedals for road cycling.
